Introduction
What is VALGAN?
VALGAN contains valganciclovir which belongs to antiviral drugs
What VALGAN is used for?
- It is used to treat cytomegalovirus (CMV) retinitis in people who have acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS)
- It is used to prevent CMV disease in people who have received a kidney, heart or kidney-pancreas transplant
Warning & Precautions
Talk to Doctor
Talk to your doctor before you take this medicine, if you:
- Have low blood cell counts
- Have kidney problems
- Are receiving haemodialysis
- Are receiving radiation treatment
Pregnancy & Breast Feeding
- If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or planning to have baby, ask your doctor for advice before taking this medicine
Children & Adolescents
- It is not known if VALGAN is safe and effective in children in infants less than 4 months of age
- Consult to your doctor for advice
Driving & Using Machines
- VALGAN can cause seizures, sleepiness, dizziness, and confusion. You should not drive a car or operate machinery
Interactions
Tell your doctor if you are taking,
- Tell your healthcare provider about all the medicines you take, including prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins and herbal supplements
How to Use
- Always take this medicine exactly as your doctor has told you
- Swallow the tablet with water
- Take VALGAN with food
- Do not break or crush this medicine
If you take more VALGAN
- If you have taken more VALGAN than you should, talk to your doctor or local hospital accident and emergency department
If you forgot to take VALGAN
- Do not take a double dose to make up for forgotten individual doses. If you have forgotten to take your medicine, take it as soon as you remember
- If your next dose is due within 2 hours, take the dose now and skip the next one
If you Stop taking VALGAN
- Do not stop taking this medicine, until the doctor has told you to do so
Side Effects
Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them
Serious
- Blood and bone marrow problems
- Fertility problems
- Birth defects
- Cancer
Common
- Diarrhoea
- Low white cell, red cell and platelet cell counts in blood tests
- Fever
- Fatigue, nausea, headache
- Sleeplessness
- Urinary tract infection
- Shaky movements (tremors)
- Vomiting
- Upper respiratory tract infection
More Information
- Keep this medicine out of reach of children
- Store at room temperature (15-25ºC)
- Do not use this medicine after the expiry date
