It is used to treat:
- HIV
- Chronic hepatitis B viral infection

Talk to your doctor before you take this medicine, if you:
- Are allergic to Tenofovir disoproxil or any of the other ingredients of this medicine
- Have kidney or liver problems
- Have bone problems
- Have autoimmune disorders
Pregnancy & Breast Feeding
- TAFNAT 25MG passes into your breast milk
- Talk to your healthcare provider about the best way to feed your baby
- If you are pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor for advice before taking this medicine
Children & Adolescents
- HIV-1 infected adolescents aged 12 to less than 18 years who weigh at least 35 kg and who have already been treated with other HIV medicines
Driving & Using Machines
- If you feel dizzy while taking TAFNAT 25MG, do not drive and do not use any tools or machines
Interactions
Tell your doctor if you are taking,
- Any other anti-HIV medicines
- Medicines containing adefovir dipivoxil (a medicine used to treat chronic hepatitis B)
- Aminoglycosides, pentamidine or vancomycin (medicines used for bacterial infection)
- Amphotericin B (medicine used for fungal infection)
- Foscarnet, ganciclovir, or cidofovir (for viral infection)
- Interleukin-2 (medicine used to treat cancer)
- Tacrolimus (for suppression of the immune system)
- Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs, to relieve bone or muscle pains)
- Ledipasvir, sofosbuvir or sofosbuvir, velpatasvir to treat hepatitis C infection
How to Use
- Always take this medicine exactly as your doctor has told you
- You have been prescribed Tafnat Tablet for the treatment of chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection.
- In combination with other medicines, it is used for the treatment of HIV infections.
- Take it with food, as this increases the absorption of the medicine into the body.
- Tafnat Tablet may cause dizziness or sleepiness. Do not drive or do anything requiring concentration until you know how it affects you.
- You may still develop infections or other illnesses associated with viral infection while taking this medication.
- You can also pass on HIV or HBV to others. Don't share needles or personal items that can have blood or body fluids on them.
- During treatment and for at least six months after stopping this medicine, regular blood tests are needed to monitor your liver function, level of hepatitis B virus and blood cells in your blood.
If you take more TAFNAT 25MG
- If you accidentally take too many TAFNAT 25MG, you may be at increased risk of experiencing possible side effects with this medicine, contact your immediately
If you forget to take TAFNAT 25MG
- It is important not to miss a dose of TAFNAT 25MG
- If you miss a dose, work out how long since you should have taken it take it as soon as you can, and then take your next dose at its regular time
If you stop taking TAFNAT 25MG
- Don’t stop taking TAFNAT 25MG without your doctor’s advice
- Stopping treatment with TAFNAT 25MG may reduce the effectiveness of the treatment recommended by your doctor
Side Effects
Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them
Serious
- Lactic acidosis (excess lactic acid in the blood) marked by deep, rapid breathing, drowsiness, nausea, vomiting and stomach pain
Common
- Diarrhoea, dizziness, rash, feeling weak
- Decrease in phosphate level in the blood
- Headache, feeling tired, feeling bloated, flatulence
Uncommon
- Pain in the abdomen caused by inflammation of the pancreas
- Breakdown of muscle, muscle pain or weakness
Rare
- Inflammation of the kidney, passing a lot of urine and feeling thirsty changes to your urine and back pain caused by kidney problems
- Softening of the bones (with bone pain and sometimes resulting in fractures), which may occur due to damage to kidney problem
- Fatty liver

Q. Does Tafnat prevent passing of HIV-1 and HBV to others?
In case of HIV-1 infection, Tafnat may reduce the risk of passing the virus to others, but the chances of infecting others still persist. However, in case of HBV infection, Tafnat has not proven to reduce risk of transferring the virus to others. Therefore, the patients of both HIV-1 infection and HBV infection should practice safe sex and should not share dirty needles.
Q. Is Tafnat safe to use?
Yes, Tafnat is safe if used according to the doctor’s advice. The side effects seen with Tafnat are usually mild and not serious.
Q. Upset stomach (vomiting and diarrhea) is very commonly seen with Tafnat. Will it help if I take Tafnat with food?
No, Tafnat works best when taken with meals or just afterwards. However, taking it without food does not reduce its effectiveness.
Q. For how long do I need to take Tafnat for HBV infection?
Duration of treatment will depend on the severity of HBV infection. You will need to take periodic blood tests to keep a check on the viral load and number of T cells. Your doctor will then decide the duration of the medicine accordingly. In some cases, treatment is required life long.
Q. I vomited after taking Tafnat. What should I do?
Take another tablet of Tafnat if you vomit within 1 hour of taking it. If you vomit after more than an hour of taking Tafnat, then you need not take another tablet. Consult your doctor if you have vomiting every time you take Tafnat.
Q. What should I do if I forget to take Tafnat?
If you forget to take Tafnat within 12 hours of the time you usually take it, you should take Tafnat with food as soon as possible and resume the normal dosing schedule. If you miss a dose of Tafnat by more than 12 hours and it is almost time for the next dose, you should not take the missed dose and simply resume the usual dosing schedule.
Q. Can I breastfeed while receiving treatment with Tafnat for chronic HBV infection?
No, you should not breastfeed your baby since small amounts of Tafnat pass into breast milk. Further, if your baby does not have HIV or HBV, there is a chance that the baby can get HIV or HBV through breastfeeding.
